OUR COACHING LENS

Every coach has their own personal style and also a lens through which they view the world and will work to nurture your growth and leadership. Here's what we value and teach:

Together we explicitly and courageously name and locate ourselves in white supremacy.

Together we take personal responsibility. None of us created white supremacy, and each of us is responsible to dismantle it so there is space for something new and just to take its place.

Together we center equity. We coach through an explicitly anti-racist, anti-oppression, trauma-informed lens that invites our whole and healed selves to be part of this lifelong work.

Together we build our internal capacity for this work. We value humility, curiosity, abundance, nurturance, resilience, racial embodiment, integrity, trustworthiness, and accountability as core competencies anti-racist leadership.

Together we honor the past, stand firmly in the present, and look bravely to the future. We draw throughlines that connect our struggles and hopes today to the centuries-long struggles and hopes of those who have come before and those will come after us.

Together we adopt a new way of life. We believe that this lens can be applied to every single aspect of life, without exception, from profoundly transformative relationships to more mundane but necessary tasks like creating personnel policies, navigating interpersonal conflict, and how we define and measure success of our efforts.

How It Works

Do I really need this? Is White Supremacy Really a Problem in My Workplace?

In short, YES!

In the U.S., every single one of our workplace cultures is built around and in support of white supremacist values, norms, and fears (yes, even not-for-profits!). This is the root of racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, and other forms of oppression that exist in our society.

It informs everything -- your leadership and organizational structure, titles and job descriptions, recruitment and hiring, retention and promotion, access to professional development, personnel policies and benefits you provide, how you make agendas and hold meetings, how decisions are made, how offices are organized, how you invite open conversations and deal with conflict, how you treat volunteers, coffee you purchase for the staff kitchen -- everything.

We inherited white supremacist values and fears, and have been conditioned to believe they are normal. It is a huge structural problem, and each and every one of us is responsible for either maintaining it or working to dismantle it.

This process is often deeply uncomfortable. It requires courage, persistence, and a willingness to embrace imperfection and learn from mistakes.

The good news -- we cannot do it alone, and we don't have to do it alone!

We will help you navigate these challenges, encourage you to lean into your growth edges, and help you imagine and accountably work toward an equitable future for your organization.

It will be hard, and we will do it together.

This work starts with you, but doesn't end with you.

Whether we realize it or not, each of us exists within enormous circles of influence. Every single day, you impact other peoples' lives, either directly or indirectly, either in your words and actions or your inaction and silence.

By investing in your own understanding and personal embodiment and grounding in anti-racism principles, you grow your capacity to be the anti-racism leader your organization and communities need. Through our sessions together, you will be changed, and have the opportunity to change the world around you into one you want to see.
